Shopping Online: Enhancing Product Safety and Fighting Unsafe Products Sold Online

Online Debate (Zoom) – 24 November 2021 – 12:00 – 13:30 CET

This lunch-time debate will discuss the main product safety challenges consumers face when shopping online. Considering digitalisation and market globalisation as well as the increase of connected products, is a modernisation of the current legal framework necessary?

The ongoing revision of the General Product Safety Directive will be debated. Is there a need for further measures? Are online marketplaces sufficiently covered by the ongoing reform?

The event will provide a platform for exchange of insights, views and ideas between representatives of the European Commission, legal practice, industry and the consumer community.

The debate will be opened by:

Kristyna Deiberova, Team Leader for the Revision of the General Product Safety Directive, DG Justice and Consumers, European Commission, Brussels
Rod Freeman, Partner, Cooley LLP, London
Sylvia Maurer, Head of the Department for Sustainability and Safety, BEUC – The European Consumer Organisation, Brussels
Organiser: Anastasia Patta, Course Director - Private Law, ERA
